 Purpose of Position

Under the supervision of the Library Director, provides quick reference, detailed research and reader’s advisory assistance.  Develops and maintains assigned library collections; provides one-on-one and group training for library patrons and staff; provides programming for young adults and children.  Also performs professional work in reference, collection development, reader’s advisory service, acquisitions, or other specific fields.  May supervise the work of support staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.  

            Schedule, plan and implement summer reading program, as well as other programs throughout the year for children of all ages.

            Develops and maintains library collections of books, magazines, audio-visual and other materials.  Selects materials for assigned collections.

Provides instruction in the use of the library, the library catalog, reference materials, computer databases and the Internet.  May teach classes for the public, library staff and school groups.

            Plans, directs, and/or implements special projects and programs as needed.

            Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution, or any combination of experience and education that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication

Ability to analyze data and information using established criteria, in order to determine consequences and to identify and select alternatives.  Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, copy, record and transcribe data and information.  Ability to classify, compute, tabulate and categorize data.

Ability to persuade, convince, and/or train others, including the ability to act in a lead worker capacity.  Ability to advise and interpret how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations. 

Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as materials reviews, professional library journals, patron requests, employee performance evaluations, personnel policies, library policies/procedures, program participation records, schedules, program evaluations, budget statements, computer software operating manuals, children and youth books, reference books, equipment operating manuals and non-routine correspondence.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing with Library personnel, patrons, other librarians, Village employees and volunteers.

Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability

Ability to use functional reasoning in performing influence functions such as supervising, managing, leading, teaching, directing and controlling.  Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the direction, control and planning of an entire program or multiple programs.

Mathematical Ability

Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, and calculate percentages, fractions and decimals.

Physical Requirements

Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring simple but continuous adjustments, such as computer terminal/keyboard, typewriter, telephone, fax machine, photocopier, TV/DVD player, common hand tools.

Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as data entry.

Ability to exert very moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.  Ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration.

Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.

Environmental Adaptability

Ability to work under safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as repetitive computer keyboard use and irate individuals poses little to no risk of injury.
